Before you start

Equipment and setup

A clear, level lane long enough for several controlled steps. Begin standing tall with the feet under the hips; add load only after the stepping pattern is stable.

Exercise-specific guidance

The written setup and steps on this page are tailored to this exact exercise variation.

Movement sequence

  1. Stand tall, then take a controlled step forward that is long enough to keep the front foot fully planted as you lower.
  2. Lower the back knee toward the floor while the front knee tracks with the toes and the pelvis stays mostly square.
  3. Push through the front foot to rise and bring the back leg through into the next step, regaining balance before each descent.

Form cues

  • Own each step
  • Front foot stays planted
  • Knee follows toes

Common mistakes

  • Using a stride so short that the front heel lifts
  • Falling into the next repetition before balance is restored

Scale it

Easier: Use a stationary split squat or hold a stable support.

Harder: Add light dumbbells or a longer walking set only after every step stays controlled.
