Equipment and setup
One or two dumbbells you can control through the full range.
This page currently uses general vertical push guidance. Check the exact setup and use qualified coaching when the movement is unfamiliar or complex.
Movement sequence
- Brace the trunk and start with the weight near shoulder height.
- Press upward in a smooth line while keeping the head neutral.
- Lower with control and stop before the shoulders lose position.
Form cues
- Brace before pressing
- Keep ribs down
- Reach tall without shrugging
Common mistakes
- Turning the press into a backbend
- Shrugging every rep into the neck
Scale it
Easier: Use lighter dumbbells or a machine with back support.
Harder: Use more load or add a brief pause overhead.
